The first beta of Android 14 is already here. What’s new?

You already know the procedure. Google has released the first “public” beta of Android 14 and we are here to read you the primer with the news; although from the start we can say that there are not many, since these first versions are generally aimed at developers who need to test their apps on the most recent iterations of Google’s operating system. Be that as it may, today we are here to find out what’s new, whether it’s a little or a lot, so let’s get started.

What’s new in the first beta of Android 14

baptized as UpsideDownCake (upside down pie, never tried it), this version of Android 14 claims to include the June 1, 2023 Google Play system update, so it looks like we’ve caught a time traveler.

Jokes aside, the most notable at the interface level is a back arrow that improves the experience of navigation by gestures; the same adapts to the color palette chosen for the theme. Some icons in the settings menu have also been redesigned. The last visual change worth mentioning is the option to remove the background from the navigation bar, but it doesn’t work at the moment.

Interestingly, saved passwords feature now displays all options in a vertical list when we try to log into an app.

With the first beta of Android 14 new ones also arrive language settingsspecifically when changing the language, because we found a confirmation message that gives us time to retract.

Regarding privacy and security, Google has introduced new APIs that limit app access to sensitive areas of the system; but at the user level the only notable thing is an improved security pin option, which disable animations or newly typed numbers when entering our PIN/password.

Additionally, developers can now add custom actions to system share sheet.

Otherwise there is nothing new -at the user level- that is worth mentioning, but rest assured that there are many changes internally. We remind you that Android 14 beta 1 at the moment can only be tested on Google Pixel mobiles (4A 5G onwards) and only if we are registered in the beta program.
