Patriot Spark: 512GB of storage at a great price.

Computer websites are always talking about the latest graphics card on the market, the latest processor with a beastly number of cores, that 4K monitor with which to see even the pores of the skin of the latest action character in the fashionable video game; but really, if there is a component within our towers and laptops, which has meant a palpable improvement at any level in our user experience, that has been that of solid state disks or as we all know them, SSDs. Some storage devices that little by little have been eating away at traditional hard drives based on mechanical elements and that, although they are not yet the general option as a mass storage element, they have made a place for themselves as containers of our system operating system and our favorite games and applications. Now, the little-known brand Patriot has decided to further democratize the price of these devices with the Patriot spark, a 512 GB SSD that brings us a little closer to a future without mechanical hard drives, at least for those who do not have large storage needs.

Patriot Spark: 20 cents per GB of storage.

Gizlogic-patriot-Spark-SSD (2)Contrary to what used to happen with low-cost solutions in the first SSDs, the market for controllers has evolved quite considerably, and this is possible to find in the 512 GB Patriot Spark sequential read and write speeds of 550MB / s and 500MB / s, very close to those that we can find in other higher priced SSDs.

The random performance isn’t bad either, with up to 91,000 IOPS read and 86,000 IOPS write, thanks to the use of a controller Phison PS3111-S11.

As a way to reduce costs, the type of memory used is TLC, so these discs will not have a useful life as long as the solutions based on MLC or SLC memory, but various durability analyzes have already been commissioned to show that even so, the duration of these discs is above that of any mechanical disk, so it is not something we should worry too much about, despite the bad press that is done to the TLC memory and that in its day the MLC memory that today we find in most SSDs also suffered unjustifiably .

For now we have not been able to find this album for sale, but we do know that there will be versions of 128, 256 and 512 GB at respective prices of 35, 57 and 105 dollars, which should be reflected in similar prices in euros despite taxes; which makes them extremely attractive. It is clear that we are not facing an SSD that is going to offer us the best performance on the market, but we believe that they are ideal to give a second life to our old laptop or as storage or system disks in computers in which the maximum is not sought performance but significantly improve the fluidity of the team.

We will update the article with prices as soon as possible.
