Chuwi HiPad X, a very convincing entry-level tablet
The Chuwi Hipad X It is a bet aimed at the entry range that is very convincing in relation to price / features, offering a careful design, mobile connectivity and solid specifications, which is why it earns our attention this time.
For those who prefer the short version, this is a 4G tablet with a 10.1-inch FullHD screen, which is based on Android 10 and is powered by a MediaTek MT8788 chip. It also has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, not to mention the long-lasting battery inside. Design that doesn’t look cheap
Normally when we deal with tablets (and even smartphones) in this range, we already know what to expect, and by that we mean plastic designs to cut the manufacturing cost. However, the Chuwi HiPad X is one of the exceptions to the rule and stands out with a Light metal construction with CNC cut finish on the back deck, the result? An elegant look, resistant, light (550 grams) and considerably thin (just 9.5mm thick).
In this sense, the brushed metal finish is not the only thing that this tablet has to show off, as it also has rounded corners, a comfortable grip and full lamination for the screen, which we will delve into a little later.
A detail that we should not overlook are the magnetic pins that are located on one of the sides of the device. As you can guess, this offers the possibility of connecting a magnetic keyboard to boost our productivity or simply write more comfortably. However, this keyboard is sold separately, so we do not see it as a greater incentive.
Screen and sound
As a screen we have a 10.1 inch IPS LCD panel, which provides a resolution 1,920 x 1,200 pixels FullHD as a result of its 16:10 aspect ratio. There are no complaints about the screen, it complies in terms of color reproduction, viewing angles and brightness level; even supports Stylus pen to draw or write by hand, but as with the keyboard, we will have to buy it separately, so we are not very excited about the idea.
Where they could have done a better job is with the bezels, which are considerably thick by modern standards. A better option (if you are willing to pay more) would be the Chuwi HiPad Plus, which in addition to sporting thinner edges, outlines higher definition (2,176 x 1,600 pixels) and runs a more recent operating system (Android 11). Another negative point is the sound. There is only one speaker located on the back of the device and it has a very metallic sound with very little bass.
Hardware and Features
As a nerve center we get a chip 2.0GHz Octa-Core MediaTek MT8788, which is paired with a Mali G72 GPU and backed by 4GB of RAM. It also has 128GB UFS to store our files, not to mention the TF slot that lets us add about 128GB via Micro-SD.
The set before us won’t win any awards for its power, but it goes way above what is needed to provide a smooth everyday wearing experience. Using your favorite social networks and streaming platforms will not be a problem, in fact, it can also handle games such as Call of Duty and PUGB Mobile with ease, although of course, with graphics reduced to low-medium.
The battery is another strong point, it is a 7,000mAh unit able to last one day with normal use. To make matters worse, it charges relatively quickly via the USB Type-C port.
In another vein, the operating system that drives the Chuwi HiPad X is Android 10, which detracts a bit from its appeal when considering that – at the time of writing this article – we are already in the eleventh version and we are waiting for the twelfth.
As the last notable aspect of its hardware we have the cameras, which do not really stand out at all. It’s about a 8MP rear sensor and 5MP front one; what they have in common is that they both do a poor job, but for the price it is normal.
Connectivity
In addition to Bluetooth 4.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi, the Chuwi HiPad X supports 4G, 3G and 2G networks thanks to its slot for SIM cards, which will allow us to use it as a telephone and take advantage of the GPS function. On the other hand, the physical interfaces are: USB type C, 3.5mm headphone jack and Micro-SD slot.
