Apple Personal Voice, create a synthetic version of your voice

The American apple recently introduced a handful of accessibility features aimed at helping people with cognitive, visual and hearing disabilities; and one of them is very interesting even out of that context. In this sense, we are talking about personal voicewhich allows you to create a synthesized version of the user’s voice for future use.

Personal Voice can create a copy of our voice

According to Apple, Personal Voice is there to help people at risk of losing the ability to speak, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients; allowing them to easily create a copy of their voice, which can be used to convert text to speech, but to a familiar and recognizable voice.

In recent months we’ve seen monumental advances in AI voice cloning, and Personal Voice isn’t much different from those solutions. In this sense, this accessibility function uses machine learning to create a copy of the user’s voicewho will obviously have to provide a sample of his voice.

To be exact, the user must read aloud a set of random text prompts until they have a 15 minute audio sample. This process can be done either from an iPhone or an iPad.

Other accessibility features

Along with Personal Voice, other accessibility features were announced that will also be very useful for people with disabilities, some of these are:

Live Speech: This feature allows users to type what they want to say for their device to read aloud during calls, FaceTime, or in-person conversations. Thanks to its integration with Personal Voice, users will be able to use their own voice with this function.

Magnifying glass: The new version of the Magnifier app not only serves to magnify the image, but can also help interact with physical objects. In this sense, using a combination of Machine Learning, the front camera and the LiDAR scanner, the Magnifying Glass tool can pinpoint the function of each button as users move their finger across the screen.

Improvements to Siri and VoiceOver: For VoiceOver users Siri’s voices should sound more natural, as if that weren’t enough, the speed at which Siri speaks can now be adjusted, with options ranging from 0.8X to 2X.

As for the arrival of these features, Apple did not give an exact date, we only know that they will arrive “later this year.” In addition, Initially Personal Voice will only be available in English.
